Who reviews applications and decides who gets awarded?
The SAGA selection panel is comprised of 5 people, appointed by the Spokane Arts Fund Board of Directors. Each year, it will consist of one board member, one commissioner, and three community members with experience in various arts disciplines. All five selection panelists will be required to declare any potential conflicts of interest, and agree to keep their deliberations confidential. Spokane Arts staff members will not have any input on which proposals receive funding, and will only serve as neutral observers to ensure fair deliberations.
How can someone get application questions answered?
Jennifer Knickerbocker, Grants Administrator at Spokane Arts will host several Grant Application workshops, so that anyone who has questions about the application process, guidelines, etc. can seek help. We’ ll have handouts of sample grant applications, a glossary of terms( such as:“ what does‘ in-kind support’ mean?”), and field general and specific questions. Jennifer will also hold drop-in office hours and will be available to answer questions via phone and email.
What can the funds be used for?
Proposals can request funding for projects, arts education programs, exhibitions, events, artist supplies, operating support, and more. Details can be found in the Guidelines( PDF on the website). Most importantly, each applicant is required to demonstrate the artistic merit of their proposal, show their plan for executing it within a one-year timeframe, and demonstrate how it will impact the community.
How much money will be granted?
Each grant applicant, no matter which category they fall into, can apply for a grant of any amount between $ 1 and $ 10,000. Applicants will specify why they are seeking the dollar amount they request. The selection panel may offer partial funding to some proposals, which the applicant can either accept or reapply via another round in the hopes of obtaining full funding.
How often are grants awarded?
Grants will be distributed in 4 rounds( quarterly). During 3 out of the 4 rounds, multiple grants will be awarded each time, drawing from a pot of approximately $ 25,000 per round. During the 4th round, only one $ 10,000 grant( called a
“ responsive grant”) will be awarded, with the winner announced at the
Spokane Arts Awards.
“ As the grant program grows, we will be collecting stories from grant recipients on their successes and challenges, and hope to tell the story of how funding for the arts can benefit and enliven our region,”
said Jennifer Knickerbocker.( Cont.)
