THE BEST ICE CREAMS By Chandler Anderson Baird Mary Lou’s Milk Bottle is a true Spokane staple. When the restau- rant has a literal milk bottle con- structed into the exterior, you can’t resist stopping in to have a milkshake. “Oreo” is my prefer- ence. We like to order one milk- shake and ask them to split it. It fits perfectly in two glasses and it’s just the right size to leave you room for a burger and fries. They have a great lunch special where you can get a burger, side, and shake for $8.50, any day of the week. At the Milk Bottle,  they only take cash or check so come prepared or  use their  ATM on site. The “River City Sludge” shake has chocolate, hot fudge and huge brownie chunks. You’ll need a spoon to make it through this shake.  Ferrante’ s MARKETPLACE CAFE Gelato: Ferrante’s Marketplace Cafe  4516 South Regal Street Spokane, WA  509.443.6304 Ferrante’s is a family-owned Italian restaurant on the South Hill serving up rich pasta dishes, authentic Italian pizza, and natural gelato. It is your one- stop-shop on the South Hill for dinner and a little boutique shopping! Stop in for a romantic date night, bring the whole family, or order to-go and enjoy your pasta at home. This is authentic, fresh Italian food and many of the recipes at Ferrante’s go back generations. Ferrante’s is one of the few places in Spokane with authentic gelato. They get the gelato from a 3rd generation Italian family in Michigan. Ferrante’s distributes their gelato to a couple oth- er places in Spokane but nothing goes better with gelato than Italian food, so I’d recommend getting it here.  This gelato is all natural, using fresh fruit and real ingredients. We loved their “Blueberry Merlot Sorbetto” which contains less than 1% dairy. They also serve spumoni, a traditional Italian gelato. July | August 2017 57
