All they wanted to know was which girl was pretty enough to marry the general's son. He was the bravest and the most handsome boy in the village. So they decided to make a bet. They would let four white pigeons free and they would wait to see which of them would one of the pigeons choose.
They were all very friendly with the birds because all of them would feed and take care of them every day.
So, they let the four birds go. Three of them returned to their cages but one of them went straight to Sofia's hand. The five girls looked at Sofia full of jealousy and meanness.
No one noticed the bird seeds Sofia was hiding in her hand...
