PALIMPSEST: SHAPING OUR CITIES WITH VIRTUAL REALITY JOHN RUSSELL BEAUMONT
Biography Russell Beaumont, Haavard Tveito and Takashi Torisu worked together in the Interactive Architecture Lab, a network of designers based at the Bartlett, UCL. Their work explores how technologies can preserve architecture, how they foster appreciation for urban history, and can facilitate participatory design.
Talk Can virtual reality be a tool for social change? Using 3D scanning and virtual reality, the palimpsest records personal stories and local histories, layering them over the city at a 1:1 scale. We aim to create more inclusive planning practices, using emerging technology to directly connect communities, governments, and developers in conversation. We also create historical documents, recording spaces and stories that might otherwise be lost.
