INTERNATIONAL FAMILY DAY AT ALLIED RAPID REACTION CORPS HQ
Celebrating Cultures, Uniting Families
Lt Col Panagiotis Kagioglou
Every year, ARRC Headquarters comes alive with colour, flavour, and friendship during International Family Day— a special event that brings together military and civilian staff, along with their families, to celebrate the diverse cultures that make up our NATO community.
This much-loved tradition is about more than just having a good time— it’ s a chance to appreciate the rich mix of nationalities that work side by side every day. With 21 nations taking part, the day is a vibrant showcase of the cultures, foods, and traditions that make our headquarters such a unique place.
The heart of the event is the national tents, each one proudly put together by representatives of their respective countries. Walking from tent to tent feels like travelling the world in an afternoon. From homemade specialties to drinks unique to each country, the variety is incredible— and always served with a warm welcome and a story behind the dish.
But food is just one part of the experience. Each tent also highlights something special about the country it represents. That might be traditional clothing, music, handmade crafts, or even a quick history lesson. These displays help everyone— adults and kids alike— learn more about where their colleagues come from, and what values and customs shape their lives.
This sharing of culture is what makes International Family Day so meaningful. It’ s not only about celebration; it’ s about connection. Whether you’ re chatting over a plate of food, learning how to say“ hello” in a new language, or seeing a traditional outfit up close, there are endless opportunities to understand and appreciate each other better.
For children, the day is also packed with fun and learning. There are games, face painting, and creative workshops that invite them to explore different cultures in playful and engaging ways. These activities help spark curiosity and build respect for others from a young age— important values not just for our community, but for the world they’ re growing up in.
This year’ s event also featured several live performances, adding even more energy and excitement. The crowd was entertained by the always-popular Morris dancers, who brought English folklore to life with their lively moves and colourful costumes. Another highlight was a stunning Khukuri pattern display, demonstrating the discipline and tradition of the Gurkhas. These performances reminded us that behind every flag is a story worth sharing, and a culture that enriches us all.
At the end of the day, International Family Day is a celebration of everything that makes NATO strong— not just our shared mission, but our shared humanity. It’ s a time to step away from our daily responsibilities and simply enjoy being part of a diverse and welcoming community.
As we look ahead to next year’ s event, let’ s carry the spirit of this day with us throughout the year. Let’ s keep learning from one another, keep celebrating our differences, and continue building a workplace where everyone feels at home— no matter where they come from.
Because when we come together— not just as colleagues, but as people— we strengthen not only our teams, but the values that hold us together.
