North Texas Food Bank’s Mobile Food Pantry Bringing food to people who need it most. Sean knows how hard it is to focus and learn when you’re hungry. Sean is a student at Collin College and struggled with food insecurity his first year in school. Things were so tough he had to rely on one of his professors who graciously brought him food, like chili, oatmeal and applesauce. It wasn’t until he heard about the North Texas Food Bank’s Mobile Pantry program that Sean found relief, and now he is speaking out about hidden hunger in North Texas. “Hunger prevents you from being fully present in the classroom,” Sean says. “It’s like that for me as an adult dealing with hunger. Imagine what it’s like for younger kids who are asked to focus for hours at a time, when all they can think about is being able to eat.” Made possible by the support from friends like you, the Food Bank’s Mobile Pantry program is a traveling pantry that delivers nutritious food, including fresh produce and refrigerated items, directly to communities with high need. It’s like a market on wheels! “Hunger prevents you from being fully present in the classroom.” Kiss Hunger Goodbye Sunday, December 2 Klyde Warren Park Calling all couples! Page 6 Two brothers volunteer their time to make a difference. The North Texas Food Bank is grateful for volunteers, like brothers Jack and Dave — especially during the holiday season when the demand for food is at an all-time high. The hours they devote to volunteering mean that our trucks are full and our shelves are stocked for the children, seniors and families who turn to the Food Bank for help. Jack and Dave have a heart for the North Texas Food Bank. They started helping in February of 2014 after the church Jack attended came for a volunteer shift. Soon, the brothers were volunteering multiple times a week. “We get more out of this than we give,” Dave says. Over the years, Jack has had a series of strokes, which made it difficult to perform normal, everyday tasks or physical activity. But wanting to continue to volunteer, Dave began picking up his brother every week so they could continue their work together. Volunteering helped Jack stay active and even helped his mental rehabilitation following his stroke. “I couldn’t do any of this before I started coming here, and now I can do all of it,” Jack says of his Empty Bowls Friday, March 8 Perot Family Campus This annual event is celebrating its 20th year! They also enjoy seeing the passion in all of the children who give their time to help fight hunger. But most of all, they want to help their neighbors in North Texas. “You may feed these people food, but you’ll feed yourself more,” Dave says of volunteering. “For me, it’s the satisfaction that I’ve done an honest day’s work where it’s going to be appreciated and it’s going to a good cause.” Recently, Jack and Dave have begun volunteering at our new Perot Family Campus and are excited about the opportunities this facility provides. “You can appreciate what you have, and the people are mighty appreciative of what you give.” If you’d like to learn about North Texas Food Bank’s volunteer opportunities, go to ntfb.org/volunteer.
