Heathrow response
Council leader Julian Bell has promised to protect
the interests of Ealing residents following news the
government supports the expansion of Heathrow Airport.
He said: “We will be demanding the best possible deal
for our residents from Heathrow Airport if expansion goes
ahead. This will be achieved through tough negotiation,
which is something that has worked in the past – notably
over HS2, when we got more for our residents by having a
seat at the negotiating table.

Speed limit trial in Acton
A 20mph speed limit is being trialled right across Acton. If it
is successful, the limit could be extended across the borough.
The council’s trial in Acton began on 5 September following
a public consultation and will run approximately for a year. If
it proves to be a success, a second public consultation will be
carried out on the idea of it being applied to the entire borough.

“We are seeking to get everything we can for local people.
We are calling for a significant package of mitigations for
the problems a third runway will inevitably cause – more
noise, pollution and traffic. We want a complete ban
on night flights, except in emergencies. We also want a
£150million package of measures against the environmental
impacts and to compensate those affected – and I have
joined the Heathrow Skills Taskforce headed up by Lord
Blunkett to make sure the people of Ealing capitalise on the
tens of thousands of new jobs, apprenticeships and career
development opportunities that will certainly be generated
if the third runway goes ahead. If the government is
determined to press ahead with it, we must ensure it leaves
us with a genuine and worthwhile legacy for local people.”
Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, cabinet member for transport,
environment and leisure, said: “We want our roads to be
among the safest in London and already have 20mph zones
or limits on more than a third of the roads in the borough.”
The speed limit will not apply to Transport for London ‘red routes’
such as the A40 or the A406 Hanger Lane/North Circular Road.
