New music award

A new award for young singer-songwriters has been set up by the council to honour the memory of Alice Gross . Alice was a promising musician and songwriter who attended Brentside High School and tragically lost her life in September 2014 . She played violin and piano and was learning the guitar . She hoped , one day , to have a career in music . The council ’ s Ealing Music Service has added an Alice Gross Memorial Song Writing Award to the seven other categories of its annual awards . The winner of the new award will have the chance to record a song during a day ’ s session at British Grove Studios in Chiswick , which was founded by Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits . The deadline for applications is 11 April and the winner will be announced in June . Applicants must be in year 10 or 11 and either live , or go to school , in the borough . Details can be found online at ealingmusicservice . com / awards Councillor Binda Rai , cabinet member for children and young people , said : “ As a council we wanted to honour Alice ’ s memory and the love she had for music making and song writing .”

Topic of discussion

People are being asked to suggest subjects or problems they think the borough ’ s councillors should look at in the coming year . You have until 28 April to submit an idea ; at which point a programme will be agreed for the council ’ s scrutiny panels for 2017 / 18 . The panels start meeting in June and seek to improve local services by examining the work of the council and other local organisations . Your idea could relate to anything affecting local services , but the panels are particularly keen to hear about any transport issues . Topics suggested must affect a group or community of people ( not just one person or a household ) and must not have been considered by a scrutiny panel during the last 12 months . Email ideas to scrutiny @ ealing . gov . uk or post to Scrutiny Unit , Perceval House , 14-16 Uxbridge Road , Ealing , W5 2HL . You can also call 020 8825 7497 .

Orchard number two will be planted at Southall Recreation Grounds . Work was due to start on 1 March with a public planting day due to be held on Saturday , 4 March between 10am-3pm – with the plan of putting in around 45 fruit trees , along with some hedges .
