UP FRONT Hootie warms up g artwork Pupil at Featherstone High doin Southall rising with art This April will mark the 40th anniversary of peaceful protests in Southall against fascists that turned into bloody battles. Sadly, it resulted in the death of a local teacher, Blair Peach. Workshops in local schools are being held to explore the events of 1979 through creative arts and to look at how Southall has transformed over the past 40 years and what the future holds. They are being led by Vivek Chaudhary, an experienced writer who has lived in Southall all his life. It will culminate in a Southall Rising art exhibition held at the Dominion Centre in April, featuring film, photography and writing. Two council ward forums, Southall Broadway and Southall Green, funded the project along with money secured from the Big Lottery Fund. Visit ealingnewsextra.co.uk/features/rising for the full story. Heathrow expansion Ealing Council has voted to oppose the proposed expansion of Heathrow Airport. At a meeting of the full council, a motion against the construction of a third runway was backed by councillors. Although the council recognised the valuable role the airport plays in the local economy, councillors decided a third runway could have a detrimental effect on the quality of residents’ lives in the borough through damaging levels of air pollution. Heathrow Airport is running two public consultations on its expansion plans - the first of which is live now, until 4 March. Consultation events are also being held in Ealing on 1 February and Northolt on 15 February. Visit www.heathrowconsultation.com/consultations The seventh Hanwell Hootie music festival will take place on Saturday, 11 May. As Around Ealing was going to press, the organisers were still open to local bands applying to take part in either the main event or one of its side events. The Photo by Liz Jenner Hootie attracts an average of 21,000 to the town and has been nominated for awards. It is run by a not-for-profit community interest company; and is sponsored by Marshall Amplification and Ealing Council among others. Keep an eye on ealingnewsextra.co.uk for a preview.
