RECYCLING WHEN YOUR BINS ARE COLLECTED – AND WHAT TO PUT IN There is very little waste that cannot be recycled. You might be surprised: ■ All food waste can go in the green food waste bin, collected weekly ■ Put carrier bags, cling film, crisp packets, sweet wrappers, polystyrene, nappies, crockery and pyrex in your black rubbish bin, collected fortnightly ■ DIY waste should be taken to one of our recycling and reuse centres (Greenford or Acton) – as should garden waste unless you sign up for the council’s garden waste collection service ■ Most of the rest can go in your blue recycling bin, collected fortnightly. Find out more at www.ealing.gov.uk/bins Weekly Recycling week Rubbish week DID YOU KNOW? ■ Black wheelie bins must be put out with the lid closed. Extra black bags left beside or on top of the bin will not be collected. If you are producing more waste than will fit in a standard black bin, then please recycle more. If you live in a larger than average household, you may need a bigger bin and can fill in a form at www.ealing.gov.uk/bins ■ Recycling outreach officers have been visiting a number of streets around the borough – particularly those where missed collections have been reported – to provide residents with advice on recycling and, where necessary, to place orders for food waste bins and discuss any issues or questions around recycling. By the end of July, 444 roads and 9,500 houses had been visited. The council will take extra recycling. Leave it next to your blue bin on your recycling week. Do not leave it in black rubbish sacks because crews will assume that it is rubbish and not collect it. Instead you could use a carrier bag. Large pieces of cardboard can be folded next to the bin with all the sticky tape removed. around ealing Autumn 2016 45
