RECYCLING
Chop your food waste
Approximately, a third of the waste in the average household bin is food waste.
Yet it is easy to recycle it in your food waste bin.
W
hen food waste is sent
to landfill instead of
being recycled, it rots
down without oxygen
and creates methane, a powerful
greenhouse gas that contributes to
climate change.
However, what you put in your
food waste bin instead will be sent to
an ‘anaerobic digestion’ plant to be
broken down into a magical mixture
of mulch and gas that can be turned
into electricity to power homes, and
compost to feed local farms.
It can cut down on street
litter, too, as will be
explained later.
So, there is a strong
environmental case for you
to recycle your food waste.
The council also has a
target of recycling 50% of
the borough’s household waste
by 2018. At the end of 2014,
our recycling rate stood at an
all-time high of 44%. Rec X
