UP FRONT Win prizes in new photo contest Our popular Seasons of Ealing photography competition is taking a well- earned break. But fear not avid snappers for we have a new one to get stuck in to. And, what is more, there is now an extra prize for the winner and the runners-up. We have teamed up with Tonkotsu Ealing for the new contest, which is called Love Your Place. The winner and runner-up will still be published in Around Ealing – as well as on our website ealingnewsextra.co.uk – but Tonkotsu Ealing is also offering the winning entry a meal for two at the new restaurant, and free bowls of ramen for the people finishing in second and third places. Love Your Place is about local people as much as showing off what we like about our borough: From unsung heroes helping in the community or caring for the local environment, to people enjoying their favourite places. Full details of the Love Your Place competition, and how to enter, can be found at ealingnewsextra.co.uk/features/photo Building up learning The next generation of local tradespeople are learning valuable experience at one of the borough’s biggest regeneration projects. Southall Waterside housing development is home to the West London Construction Academy, developed by Berkeley Group, West London College, the council and trade partners. Launched in October 2018, the academy gives people aged 16 and above an opportunity to train to become brick layers, plumbers and electricians. All apprentices benefit from individual support from business champions and mentors. And, when they graduate, a number of positions will be available for apprentices with Berkeley and its supply chain at Southall Waterside itself. We have teamed-up with the Ealing Half Marathon to give you the chance to win a place in this year’s race and VIP marquee access, plus a whole lot more – including a 30-minute massage. Whether you are an experienced runner or just getting started, this fantastic prize bundle is sure to keep you on track for training-up for the award-winning event on 29 September. Ealing Half is producing a training plan that runners can follow, too. Small and medium-sized businesses as diverse as glass manufacturers, co-working hubs and audio-visual rental companies have successfully applied for help from Ealing Council’s smart business grants to make changes to their lighting, heating and more. So far, 22 local companies have benefited by becoming more energy efficient. Collectively, it is estimated they are saving 52 tonnes of harmful carbon dioxide emissions (the most infamous ‘greenhouse gas’) per year. And the companies are also saving a total of almost £36,000 a year. Visit ealingnewsextra.co.uk/features/ energy-monster for more. around ealing    April/May 2019 7
