jobs to help the family avoid sinking deep into debt. Hoseok recalls her physical distance, her presence, his mother’s voice clear through the phone. It was the memory of these sacrifices, devotion, and strength which allowed him to become the person he is now. With his mother’s support, Hoseok began dancing in the underground scene in Gwangju, eventually joining the crew Neuron. Showing a lot of promise with his ability to perform popping and boogaloos, a style of dance showcasing fluid movements. Dancing and performing were a large part of Hoseok’s life as he found a way to mix his academic studies with dance practice. He recalls, “In middle school while I studied, I also did my best learning how to dance. I received various awards with my performances and I remember that was also pretty famous between my friends.” He was so good he won a national dance competition in South Korea in 2008. Before finishing high school, Hoseok began the process of becoming a K-pop Idol. He auditioned for JYP, another music company in South 3
