Song #7 Dionysus The loosener. That’s who Dionysus was to the Greeks and in Greek mythology. He upset everything, trampling on old values, breaking down resistance, and freeing you of your persona. He can’t be turned down or ignored; if you try, he will just overwhelm you. In “Dionysus,” we find the seven-man personality proclaiming he has figured out a way to integrate Dionysus because he recognizes that you can’t resist him. “This is a song of celebration and breaking out of the persona,” Stein says. “If you resist it, it will break you down...You can’t ignore Dionysus. You’ve got to find another way to let him live in your life.” Dr. Stein feels it is symbolic that MOTS: Persona was released in the springtime. “It’s new life,” he explains. “It’s rebirth. Spring is a time of exuberance [when] it’s all greening up and the flowers are blooming.” It’s also powerful that this album finishes with a hymn to Dionysus because it suggests they are ready to move on from persona and into the next stage of individuation. “Perhaps they are arriving at a place of release from the constraints of the persona,” he muses. Let’s continue to follow BTS on this journey. Bibliography Stein, Murray. (2019). Map of the Soul – Persona: Our Many Faces. Asheville, NC: Chiron Publications. 29
