three out of four Jungian archetypes, and
Map of the Soul: Persona is the final piece
in search of one’s true self. The first album
in “Love Yourself” series, Her , is theorized
to represent the ‘anima ’ archetype. In the
“Highlight Reels,” the girls act as the femi-
nine side of the boys - their female alter ego.
Tear hints the ‘shadow ’ archetype where
dark and suppressed feelings of them are
accentuated. Answer revolves around the
‘ self’ archetype which symbolized the ac-
ceptance and awareness of their own exis-
tence, their ‘ ego .’
The word ‘ persona ’ was used in Ro-
man times to signify a mask worn by an
actor. In Jungian psychology, the persona
represents the social mask that each indi-
vidual ‘wears’ while interacting with others
in society; it represents the personality we
try to show to others, a secondary reality.
This would close off the four Jungian ar-
chetypes, bringing the search of true self
to an end.
