BTS’ second release in the Love Yourself series
is sleek, thematic -a mix of emotions wrapped
in stirring EDM and alt R&B- that stands out as
one of their most effortless albums yet.
While Love Yourself 承 - Her
reflected on the lighter parts of love,
with “Tear”, BTS looks at the darker
parts of love, expanding on themes they
explored in earlier music and bringing
them to a whole new level. Our intro to
the album is “Singularity.” Slow, sultry
and slinking, V gives us what could be
considered the central question of the
album: “Have I lost myself? Or did I
gain you?”
“Singularity” sets up the narrative arc
of the album, in which the speaker
navigates dream worlds which are
alternately hell or paradise and
struggles with the loss of love,
loneliness, and anxiety. This leads
directly into the beginning of
“Fake Love,” the lead single of
the album, characterized by
rock instrumentation, trap beats,
and angsty hip-hop.
Perhaps the most devastating moment
of the album comes on only the
third track, “The Truth Untold”.
Featuring the work of acclaimed EDM
master Steve Aoki, “The Truth Untold”
represents a sharp diversion from
the norm; stepping away from heavy
instrumentation and aggressive drops,
“The Truth Untold” might be the starkest
song that BTS has ever recorded.
