Later he continued his education in Russia. While studying criminal law at the University of Moscow, he became involved in the theatre and was trained at the Moscow Art Theatre under Yevg- eny Vakhtangov and Konstantin Stanislavsky. In 1918, Mamoulian founded a drama studio in Tiflis. In 1920, together with the Russian Repertory Company he toured to England, where he decided to reside in order to escape the Soviet regime oppressions and continued to study drama at the University of London. He began di- recting English stage productions in 1922. In 1923, he im- migrated to the United States , where he directed grand operas and operettas at the Eastman Theatre in Roches- ter (New York) for several years. During the late 1920s, Mamoulian was teaching and di- recting in New York City. His production of DuBose Hey- ward’s Porgy (1927) made a deep impression on American theatre. While remaining a busy stage director during the late 1920s, Mamoulian directed the early sound film “Ap- plause” (1929) at Paramount’s Astoria Studio in Queens.
