Dunn Elementary
Pinwheels for Peace
Dunn Elementary participated in Pinwheels for Peace on
Monday, Sept. 21 along with more than 6 million people
around the world in honor of International Day of Peace.
Art teacher Sue Jackson heads this project every year for
Dunn. She had each student color and decorate squares
of paper with symbols and words that represent peace.
Students and staff took a trip to the front of the school lawn
to plant nearly 600 pinwheels.
Pinwheels for Peace is an art installation project started
in 2005 by Ann Ayers and Ellen McMillan, who were art
teachers in Florida, as a way for their students to express
their feelings about what’s going on in the world and in their
lives. The project was quickly embraced by millions of art
teachers, parents, children and adults who desire peace in
our world. The organization chose pinwheels to represent
peace because it is a childhood symbol that reminds us of
times when things were simple, joyful and peaceful.
Dunn students discussed the importance of peace and what
peace means to them. The school choir also participated by
singing in front of the school while the pinwheels were being
planted. This was an awesome opportunity for the students,
faculty and the community to come together to celebrate
and promote peace. During the week that the pinwheels
were displayed, people who passed by were reminded of the
need for peace in our world and they were encouraged to do
their part in making a difference. †
