EMPLOYMENT
The availability of jobs, variety of employment opportunities, and wages provided by local employers
are oftentimes a good indicator of the overall well‐being of the general area. Table 1L provides histori‐
cal employment characteristics from 2005 to 2013 in five analysis categories, including the Dallas/Fort
Worth/Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), Tarrant and Dallas Counties, the State of Texas,
and the United States.

Total employment in the region has grown at well over one percent annually since 2005. Prior to the
economic recession that the United States experienced back in 2008, it was not uncommon for em‐
ployment growth in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex to exceed three percent annually. Although the
recent downturn has affected the employment base and growth, the region continues to sustain an
economy that provides a variety of employment options serving multiple industries.
PER CAPITA PERSONAL INCOME
Table 1M compares the per capita personal income (PCPI) for the Dallas/Fort Worth/Arlington MSA
and Tarrant and Dallas Counties since 2000. The PCPI for the State of Texas and United States is also
provided for this same time period. PCPI is determined by dividing the total income by population. In
order for PCPI to grow, income growth must outpace population growth significantly. As shown in the
table, the region has experienced positive growth in PCPI since 2000. Locally, the PCPI decreased dur‐
ing the recession but has returned to positive growth in recent years.
