The Arlington Fire Department is an innovative and adaptive organization working to provide the best in needed services . We take our responsibility as stewards of public funds seriously . Leveraging partnerships with other public and / or private entities helps us achieve strategic community service priorities . The AFD is a data driven organization seeking cost effective solutions to meet and exceed our citizen ’ s needs and expectations .
The Department is an ISO-1 and an EMAP accredited Emergency Management organization . The Department ’ s EOD team is an FBI accredited Bomb Squad and the 911 Dispatch Center is a CALEA accredited organization . Arlington is recognized as a Heart Safe and Storm Ready Community due to the great work of the Arlington Fire Department team .
The Fire Department is a civil service department and is engaged under the Meet and Confer statute . Firefighters are represented by APFF local 1329 .
EMS response
Approximately 80 % of AFD responses are emergency medical calls . The Fire Department oversees the City ’ s ambulance provider AMR , operating under a Failsafe Franchise model . The Fire Chief oversees the EMS system contract . AFD serves as first responder organization while AMR provides ambulance transport services . The EMS system Medical Director reports to the Fire Chief . The Arlington EMS system produced significant results during COVID-19 pandemic with over 240K vaccinations facilitated by the Arlington Fire Department and its EMS partner AMR .
