Your Arizona Horse Council O rganized in the 1960’s as the Arizona State Horsemen’s Association, the Arizona Horse Council is a broad-based, statewide equestrian group whose mission is to preserve, promote and protect Arizona’s equestrian lifestyle. Below are some examples of how we fulfill this mission. into the field in order to properly care for equines. (This bill has since passed). Our active involvement with the legislature, counties and other governmental bodies gives us the ability to be proactive rather that reactive when it comes to horsemen’s rights. We are the only equestrian group in Arizona to employ a full-time lobbyist, which gives us the ability to monitor, evaluate and recommend changes to proposed legislation that could potentially limit the rights of horse owners or conflict with normal horse maintenance practices. We also have the ability to author and sponsor legislation. This gives you as a horse owner a voice with the legislature. We have the ability to spread alerts and mobilize equestrians on short notice. For example, members were sent alerts to support the Veterinarian Equine Mobility Act allowing veterinarians to carry certain restricted drugs Some examples are: • Watch for and address environmental issues such as dust and manure disposal issues; • Monitor planning and zoning changes for issues affecting equestrians. Recent examples include portable corrals, arena parking and arena lighting; • Develop alliances and good working relationships with Farm Bureau, Cattlemen’s Association, the Department of Agriculture, State Parks and the BLM; and • Provide a central point of contact regarding equine issues, and work to protect the rights of all horsemen regardless of riding discipline or breed association.
