AUGUST: BE NURTURERS
By Laura Owsley
I
’ve always heard and been told to be prepared by having emergency
supplies and food on hand in case of a natural disaster and all the other
scary things that are going on in the world. I think it’s time to get on top
of this if you are going at a snail’s pace. This is a serious matter and working
on your supply could make a huge impact on you and your family. Put it
this way, you’ll never be sorry you’re prepared but you will be if you aren’t.
This may be the best way to work on your storage. Just buy a few things
when you make your weekly grocery store run. It’s not overwhelming,
it’s very simple and doable!! Build on your 3 month supply little by little.
Buy what your family likes and uses. It’s best to buy and store what your
accustomed to eating every day, because you know you will use them. Here’s
the list for ONE adult for August:
Week 1: 12 cans fruit
Week 2: 12 cans vegetables
Week 3: 1 lb. dry fruit or raisins
Week 4: 2-3oz cans green chilies/mushrooms
14 gallons drinking water (gather a 2 week supply or more) or 4 1/2 X 24 ct.
cases 16.9 oz bottled water. Keep this supply consistently stocked.

Now I know many of you have buying school supplies on your mind. On
top of that, find out your schools emergency plan and talk to your kids
about it. Ask them what could happen if... ? Can you imagine a chid not
being prepared at least a little? What’s the back-up plan if mom or dad can’t
pick you up right away? Put together a small emergency kit your child can
take to school including a personal note from you. Kit: Comfort letter, mini
first aid kit, 2 capri suns, 2 granola bars, 2 pop tarts, 12 hour light stick, etc.
I just ate lunch at a restaurant with my two of my awesome grandsons! It
was easy and delicious and I am sharing it here:
CHICKEN PASTA SALAD
• 1 lb. cooked spiral noodles
• 2 chicken breast cooked (sautéed until done, don’t overcook!) and
seasoned the way you like it
• 2-3 tomatoes cut into wedges
• Vinaigrette dressing on side
Per dish:
• 2 cups noodles
• Top with cut up chicken
• Serve with tomato wedges and lemon vinegarette dressing on side
(or dressing you like!)
SPINACH SALAD
• Spinach
• Strawberries
• Red onion
• Slivered almonds
• Vinaigrette on the side
Simple! Serve with a little fruit for dessert
