STORAGE TIPS FOR DECEMBER

By Laura Owsley

I

know the month of December is especially busy for everyone , so the thought of even thinking about food storage is a bit unraveling . We do a lot of grocery shopping , even in December , because over the next few weeks many families gather for the holidays . We ’ re going to focus on baking supplies for the holiday feasts and these items are great for year-round baking . Because you ’ ll be buying baking items for the holidays anyway , it easy to stock up on just a bit more for your food storage . Here ’ s what we ’ re gathering for our 3 month food storage supply . You may want to stock up on more for your long term storage as well : 15 oz can pumpkin ( 2-5 years *) 15 oz can yams ( 2-5 years *) 2x14 oz broth chicken and or beef ( 2-5 years *) 2 lbs . brown sugar ( indefinitely *) 1 lb powdered sugar ( indefinitely *) 10 lbs granulated sugar ( indefinitely *) 1 box stuffing mix ( 12-18 months *) 15 lbs white flour ( 1 year in pantry , in # 10 can , 10 years *) * Shelf life .
Focus on staying warm this winter . Purchase the coats , sweaters , gloves , hat and blankets that are needed . Practice your fire drill at home with your families . Make it a fun evening as you all learn how to get out of your house if it were on fire , then show where you ’ ll all meet when your out . Fires are scary , but it is better to be prepared . Talk about how important it is to not go back into the house for anything .

I ’ ll have to say I was a bit skeptical when I read this recipe . For one , I have a great a recipe , one my mom gave me that I use all the time , but thought I would give this a try and I ’ ll tell you , it is wonderful !
PERFECT PUMPKIN BREAD
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F .
