Într-o zi, un tânăr a plecat într-o călătorie pe mare în căutare de aventură. S-a urcat la bordul unui vas care traversa Atlanticul. După mai multe zile de mers, s-a iscat o furtună. Vasul şi-a pierdut direcţia şi în cele din urmă a naufragiat pe o insulă. Tot echipajul şi toţi pasagerii s-au înecat, cu excepţia tânărului care s-a trezit singur, la mal. Zadarnic a căutat să salveze pe cineva de pe corabie, nu a mai găsit pe nimeni în viaţă.
Atunci, a plecat de unul singur pe insulă. După o perioadă lungă de mers pe jos, sleit şi obosit, a simţit cum cade în gol. Era probabil o capcană, întinsă de cineva. Tânărul a ajuns într-o groapă adâncă, de unde nu a mai putut ieşi. După câteva zile, însetat şi înfometat, şi-a dat duhul.
După mult timp, pe insulă a ajuns un grup de piraţi. Câţiva dintre ei au colindat ceva vreme pe insulă, au căzut în aceeaşi capcană şi au avut aceeaşi soartă ca tânărul aventurier. Ceilalţi piraţi din grup au plecat speriaţi şi au răspândit vestea că insula este bântuită de duhuri rele.
Într-un sat din Normandia, la malul mării, trăia un băieţel pe nume George. Toată viaţa şi-a dorit să devină marinar, să-şi facă propria ambarcaţiune şi să colinde mările. Auzise şi el de insula bântuită şi era tare curios să meargă acolo şi să dezlege misterul care o învăluia. Dar părinţii lui nici nu voiau să audă de aşa ceva.
După ce a crescut, a urmat o şcoală de marinărie, s-a îmbarcat pe un vas, a colindat lumea vreme de câţiva ani şi a deprins tainele meseriei. A pus deoparte toţi banii câştigaţi pentru a-şi cumpăra o ambarcaţiune uşoară pe care să o poată manevra singur.
Imediat ce şi-a cumpărat micul iaht, a făcut câteva curse pentru a mai câştiga ceva bani, şi-a cumpărat instrumente de navigaţie, provizii de hrană uscată, o armă de vânătoare, câteva rânduri de haine şi a plecat pe insula bântuită.
După câteva zile de călătorit singur pe mare, a ajuns pe insula la care a visat. A căzut şi el într-o capcană ca şi ceilalţi dinaintea lui. Din fericire, a avut la el un rucsac cu provizii, care să-i ajungă mai multe zile, precum şi instrumente de căţărat. Groapa în care căzuse era adâncă, dar după o zi de căţărat istovitor a ajuns la suprafaţă.
A fost foarte mirat când o voce misterioasă l-a felicitat, spunându-i că a fost primul om care a trecut de acest test. Duhul i- a oferit o pietricică, spunându-i că dacă va reuşi să o pună în vârful singurului munte de pe insulă, va reuşi să o salveze de la pieire şi va câştiga o ladă de pietre preţioase.
Băiatul a urcat pe munte, dar când a ajuns aproape de vârf, a auzit un zgomot puternic din interiorul pământului. Deodată, din vârful muntelui a ieşit un nor gros de fum şi o avalanşă de bolovani a venit la vale.
Băiatul abia a reuşit să se adăpostească într-o peşteră. Acolo a petrecut mai multe zile, deoarece muntele a fost cuprins de şiruri de lavă, pietre incandescente şi pământ ars.
După ce a trecut potopul, băiatul a urcat în vârful muntelui şi a pus piatra acolo. Din inima muntelui s-a deschis o nouă grotă şi acolo se afla o ladă plină cu bijuterii. Băiatul nu a vrut să le ia, dar vocea i-a zis că nu are de ce să se teamă. Dacă s-ar fi repezit la ele ar fi fost omorât, dar fiindcă a demonstrat că nu e lacom, vocea l- a încredinţat că le merită cu prisosinţă, mai ales după atâta muncă şi atâtea aventuri.
S-a întors la el în ţară unde a devenit bogat şi celebru.
Insula blestemelor / Curse Island
Once upon a time a young man went on a sea trip in search of adventures. He boarded a vessel crossing the Atlantic Ocean. After several days of shipping, a very powerful storm arose. The ship lost its direction and eventually wrecked on an island. All the crew and all the passengers drowned except for the young man who woke up alone at the shore. In vain he sought to save somebody from the ship, he never found anyone alive.
Then he went to the island alone. After a long walk, being exhausted, he felt as if he fell into the void. It was probably a trap, made by someone. The young man came to a deep pit, from where he could not go out. After few days, thirsty and hungry, he passed out.
After a long time, a group of pirates arrived on the island. Some of them walked on the island for some time, they fell into the same trap and had the same fate as the young adventurer. The other pirates in the group went scared and spread the news that the island is haunted by evil spirits.
In a village from Normandy, on seashore, there was a little boy called George. All his life, he wished to become a sailor, to make his own craft and to roam the seas. He also heard about the haunted island, and he was curious to go there and unravel the mystery surrounding it. But his parents did not even want to hear about it.
After growing up, he attended a marina school, boarded a boat, routed the world for several years, and learned the mysteries of the job. He put aside all the money he earned to buy a lightweight craft that he could handle alone.
As soon as he bought his small yacht, he made several races to earn some money, to buy navigation aids, dry food supplies, a hunting gun, some clothes, and shipped out to the haunted island.
After a few days of traveling alone on the sea, he reached the island he dreamed of. He fell into a trap like the others before him. Luckily, he had a backpack with supplies for several days, as well as climbing tools. The pit where it fell was deep, but after a grueling day it came to the surface.
He was very surprised when a mysterious voice congratulated him, saying he was the first person to pass this test. The Spirit gave him a pebble, telling him that if he could put it on the top of the only mountain on the island, he would save it from ruin and win a box of jewelries.
The boy climbed the mountain and as he reached the peak, he heard a loud noise inside the earth. Suddenly a thick cloud of smoke came out of the top of the mountain, and an avalanche of boulders came to the valley.
The boy barely managed to take refuge in a cave. There he spent several days because the mountain was covered with rows of lava, incandescent stones and burned earth.
After the flood had passed, the boy climbed to the top of the mountain and put the stone there. A new cave was opened from the heart of the mountain, and there was a box filled with jewels. The boy did not want to take them, but the voice told him he had nothing to fear. If he had rushed to them, he would have been murdered, but because he proved he was not greedy, the voice encouraged him to keep them, especially after so much work and so many adventures.
He returned to his country where he became rich and famous.
