AORN’s Susan Root
Discusses the Perioperative Workplace of the Future
As the economy continues to rebound from the recent recession, Baby Boomers are reaching retirement age,
impacting specialized clinical roles such as perioperative nursing. A 2014 AORN Salary and Compensation Survey
reports that roughly 50% of perioperative nurses in the workforce are age 50 or older. There will be many
“retirements over the next 5–7 years, [and a] wealth of knowledge… will be walking out [the] doors,” says Susan
Root, MSN, RN, CNOR Manager of Perioperative Education for the Association of periOperative Registered
Nurses (AORN). “The retirements and the loss of ‘native knowledge’ will not only be felt at the staff level, but
management positions will also be affected.”
