“But what I’m seeing now is if an organization is truly moving towards innovative thinking around their healthcare structure, they’re actually looking for people outside of the healthcare industry.” 4 A Broader Professional Search Is Beginning for Healthcare Compliance Healthcare organizations are beginning to look for employees outside of the industry, a significant transition from the past. Vacca reports that organizations that want to move to a more creative state are beginning to look for employees who can restructure their organization in a way that will propel them forward. “Traditionally, if you were bringing in someone new, they needed to understand healthcare. They needed at least a few years of healthcare background, a sense of what the regulatory aspects were, and an understanding of how the government pays,” says Vacca. “But what I’m seeing now is if an organization is truly moving towards innovative thinking around their healthcare structure, they’re actually looking for people outside of the healthcare industry.” Vacca suggests that a healthcare background is still very helpful, but the value of having another skillset is increasing. “Now we’re seeing healthcare systems talking to Apple or Amazon or CVS Health, and these companies are looking at wholesale pharmaceuticals in 12 states. The professional demands are naturally shifting as healthcare is evolving. Health systems are not necessarily looking for the traditional healthcare or hospital-oriented compliance officer anymore,” Vacca predicts. “They might look for someone with a pharmaceutical background, but a wholesale and retail background is going to become very important. Organizations are going to look for people who have worked in other environments, yet understand the basics of compliance and can apply them, and then they will surround them with subject matter experts.”
