Family and Consumer Sciences 7

Intended Audience: Grade 7
Major Outcomes:
• Learn about nutrition, and how to
cook healthy snacks.
• Learn to sew and care for clothing.
• Explore the world of child development and learn to better communicate
with family and friends.
• Understand the impact of personal
purchases.
Projects/Activities: Compare food labels,
prepare and eat healthy snacks and
meals, sew a simple project, evaluate
children’s toys, compare products and
access consumer information.
Instructional Focus: Apply kitchen
math and linear measurement, time
management, technical reading skills,
analyze data and practice teamwork in
lab settings.
Family and Consumer Sciences 8

Intended Audience: Grade 8
Major Outcomes:
• Learn advanced food preparation
techniques and nutrition
• Select foods that promote a healthy
lifestyle
• Identify main nutrients and their influence on health
• Apply the dietary guidelines to food
choices
• Explore future career opportunities
• Learn advanced sewing skills
Projects/Activities: Create healthy meals,
practice kitchen safety and sanitation;
complete an advanced sewing project
with optional enrichment projects.
Instructional Focus: Apply kitchen math,
linear measurement, time management,
technical reading skills, and teamwork.

Major Outcomes:
• Develop awareness of basic health
concepts including mental health,
decision-making and refusal skills.
• Investigate body systems, disease,
safety/first aid, tobacco, and other
drug use.
• Understand relationships, qualities of
friendships, and adolescent body
changes.
• To provide curriculum that directly
supports the district wellness initiative.
• Students will get a basic understanding of CPR.
Instructional Focus: Instruction is
presented in a variety of ways including
individual assignments, small and large
group activities, and discussions.
Students performing below grade level
in mathematics may be assigned to
additional mathematics support courses.
