6 ONE CENTRAL PARK T here’s a couple of remarkable things that distinguish the new apartment buildings — One Central Park — that now dominates Sydney city’s western edge. First there’s a huge heliostat reflector that cantilivers out from it’s top; and second there’s around 1000 square metres of vertical gardens by France’s Patrick Blanc that dominate the building’s northern wall. The gardens are reportedly the biggest of their kind in the world. One Central Park has just won the Best Tall Building award in the Asian and Australasian region, from the Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitats (CTBUH) based in Chicago, USA.One Central Park, East and West towers, were designed by France’s Pritzker Prize winning architect Jean Nouvel of Ateliers Jean Nouvel in conjunction with PTW Architects. Interiors of the West tower are by Sydney-based practice Smart Design Studio. The heliostat reflector cantilevers 20 metres out from the East tower, 94 metres above the ground. It carries around 500 square metres of mirrors which have been specially set to reflect light to shaded areas at the ground and podium levels. There are also 40 sun-tracking heliostat mirrors located on level 17 of the West Tower. These are designed to follow the sun’s path and reflect light up onto the array that are cantilivered out from the East Tower. www.architecture256.com
