of the existing chapel on the ground floor . The chapel has been opened up to create an open air internal courtyard and transforms it into a space of light and greenery that can illuminate the surrounding areas .
The historical architectural presence of the site is kept on street level , with the new building set back from the existing one , creating a clear distinction . Existing built fabric with no heritage significance was demolished to enable the insertion of the new multi-storey student housing building , thereby optimising the functional and urban potential of the site .
Façade The existing heritage building facing Main Road was designed in the early-mid 20th Century and has contextual significance in its relation to the street and surrounding area . Keeping this main portion of the building was an important design informant of the new additions .
A mottled and woven face-brick façade was applied to the new multi-storey residential portion , owing to the robust and forgiving nature of brick which is perfect for a low-maintenance and sustainable finish to a space subject to wear and tear . The ground floor strip of both the existing and new building has a textured plaster finish painted a dark colour . This ties the two portions together visually and allows the different fenestration rhythm of doors on the ground floor
