Recently opened in uMhlanga , the luxurious Oceans Mall is the new addition to the award – winning Oceans uMhlanga Mixed Use Development . Offering a new and exciting shopping experience , the mall is designed to cater for all walks of life and will transform the lifestyle of the entire northern region with a unique KZN mall experience . For the first time in KZN , a mall has been able to attract twelve international fashion brands who have invested over R300m in their stores despite the recent upheavals in the province . Some of the brands in the Platinum Walk include Gucci , Dolce & Gabbana , Versace , and Burberry .
The Site The site is bounded by Lighthouse Road to the south , Ridge Road to the west , Lagoon Drive to the east and Flamingo Lane to the north . The site falls approximately 12m from Ridge Road to Lagoon Drive . At the onset , the conceptual planning respected the surrounding context and local conditions . There was a determination to respect the needs of the other building users and design a well-mannered building that would acknowledge its surroundings and respond positively to the context .
The development of the site was a complex task . The existing uMhlanga Tennis Club and uMhlanga Ski Boat Club had to be relocated to new premises . New Town Centre , The Post Office and Telkom Exchange were relocated to new buildings on site and various services re-aligned and upgraded .
The planning approval allowed for the creation of a plinth comprising two retail levels and four parking levels that make up the level difference between Ridge Road and Lagoon Drive as well as the inclusion of three freestanding towers above this plinth . In this way the outlook from properties to the north and west was respected and the importance of the land and sea breezes was acknowledged . The site also benefits from sunshine and daylight throughout the day and the effects of building shadows is minimised .
SITE PLAN
There has been a conscious effort to create strong indoor / outdoor relationships and to integrate the mall into the urban environment
