PINNACLE COLLEGE RASLOUW , CENTURION
Pinnacle College Raslouw forms part of a prominent and contemporary institutional development in Raslouw , Centurion . Designed by Hofman Architects for client ADvTECH , the brief was predicated on providing a modern and inspirational learning environment for students . Phase one ( to be completed in December 2022 ) of the project includes a pre-primary school , primary school , admin building , libraries , tuckshop , uniform store , sport facilities and supporting amenities . Phase two will include another primary school building , high school and hall . The school will be able to accommodate ± 1,600 students once all phases have been completed .
In a traditional school building there will be one walkway for one row of classrooms . One of the key aspects of this design brief was to eliminate the duplication of walkways . This was achieved by pushing two opposite rows of classrooms right up against each other and creating only one 3m passage in between . In order to allow natural light into the passages , the architects made use of big portal frames with monitor roofs orientating North . They also designed lightwells in the first floor slab to allow natural light to flow into the ground floor passage and classrooms .
The character is a contemporary industrial feel with exposed steel portal frames , steel side cladding and roofs with a combination of flush-jointed face brickwork & painted plasterwork . The interiors of classrooms utilise the sloping roofs to create a spacious interior volume which also has a positive impact on the passive ventilation system and climate control inside the classrooms .
The repetition of the portal frame roofs with vertical roof sheeting , became a feature of the façades that binds all the buildings and design together with a distinct and unique industrial architectural language . With a highly visible site from two sides , the building design reveals itself from different angles .
The design aimed to be unique , dynamic and responsive . Not to be just another dull school building , but a unique and exciting educational environment .
