Major urban developments are changing forever the skyline of scenic Umhlanga Ridge , north of Durban . But it ’ s not simply the concrete forms and construction cranes which are altering the outlook . A massive , environmentally responsible landscaping project undertaken by the developers will actually enhance this unique urban landscape .
Moreland Developments , the developers of the Umhlanga Ridge New Town Centre , have carefully planned an eco-friendly environment using indigenous trees , shrubs and plants to embellish the urban lifestyle . The New Town Centre , once complete , will be a dynamic mixed-use urban development surrounding Gateway Theatre of Shopping , lying at the heart of the centre .
Built on the site of what once was sugar cane fields , this mixed-use development will boast an historic 700m grove of some several hundred indigenous trees .
The New Town Centre will incorporate over 3,000 trees lining its streets on its 143ha . Of this area 13ha is designated as open space , in keeping with Moreland ’ s aim to create an environment which focuses on being pedestrian friendly .
In the 4ha Moreland Nursery various species have been tended and cultivated , including 118 Royal Palms now in the Gateway Boulevard , 7,500 trees and 10,000 groundcover plants .
To further enhance the environment using vegetation , the road frontage of the Umhlanga Ridge New Town Centre is being developed into a coastal forest which is approximately 10ha in extent . Pioneer species for this forest are currently being planted along the M41 and N2 off-ramp , and in total some 4,000 indigenous trees will
