Matlosana Mall serves as an example of how the surrounding environment and history of the region can be incorporated into design to provide shoppers with an interesting and multi-faceted retail experience .
Developed by Redefine Properties , this super-regional mall brings world-class shopping to the Klerksdorp area and adds a quality retail asset to Redefine ’ s property portfolio . JSE listed REIT Redefine invested approximately R1 billion to develop Matlosana Mall . Its developer and leasing manager is Abacus Development Company .
Client Brief The client brief to Architects SVA International was to design a 65,000m 2 GLA Regional mall in Klerksdorp in the North West Province . The site is roughly 20 hectares in area , flanked on the north side by the N12 highway and on the south by a seasonal wetland .
The design had to accommodate all major nationals , 265 shops , 6 movie theatres , a gym and an office component on the first floor . The brief also included a food court surrounded by restaurants and fast food outlets . The restaurants brief included covered and outside sitting areas . The site had to be developed with three future development pad sites , two full intersections from the highway and 5 parking bays per 100m 2 of retail .
The project had to be developed as a one story building with basement parking constructed under the ground floor of the west wing , using the natural fall of the site
