The Kagiso Mall , in Kagiso township on the West Rand of Gauteng , was first developed in the 1980s , but had fallen into disrepair , was completely outdated and partially and poorly tenanted . Old Mutual Properties took the decision to completely redevelop the mall , keeping only the existing anchor tenant , Shoprite .

Design The new design is an enclosed mall , which can be shut down at night after trading , with strategically placed external facing tenants for trade after hours , such as fast food outlets . A total of 11,000m 2 GLA has been created with two main entrances : one from the main car park and walkway to the taxi drop off point and one for pedestrians along natural desire lines .
Although the ‘ green retail design toolkit ’ as created by the GBCSA was not yet published at the time of the design of this centre , strong emphasis was placed on sustainable design initiatives . The old building , which was demolished to make way for the new centre , was recycled as far as possible . Roof sheeting , doors and windows were donated to a local school and steel members were re-used in the construction of the incubation stalls .
