plus the increase in roof insulation within the centre , to lower energy consumption .
What has been implemented so far is only a first phase of the intended refurbishment . In the second phase , the Shoprite outlet will be renovated .
COST EFFECTIVE DESIGN : Working Within a Strict Budget The norm for shopping centre design in SA seems to often involve the allocation of substantial budgets for the ‘ architecture ’ of public places - to create grand entrances and elaborate internal malls - while other design aspects may , at times ,
be neglected e . g . - interface of a facility with its urban surroundings .
For this project , there was no room for traditional approach - simple , ‘ out of the box ’ design solutions were required . Being entrusted with the task of reviving this aging centre , within the bounds of a strict budget and an innovative tenant mix , the parameters were not treated as constraints but design catalysts . Judging by the exponential increase in foot traffic in the first phase , the Shoprite Park refurbishment has so far , been very successful - LSM levels have indeed increased and broadened .
