The refurbished and extended Sandton City shopping complex opened to the public on 10 November 2011 . Designed by MDS Architecture in association with RTKL Architects and MMA Design Studio , the new Protea Court has already won a number of local and international awards . Its distinctive design and innovative use of new materials has reinforced the complex ’ s reputation as an icon in the area .
The Protea Court and south-east extension to the centre has added 30,000m 2 of gross lettable area , taking the complex to a massive 150,000m 2 GLA . The space features a multi-volume entrance court that accesses two levels of retail , two levels of parking and an additional two future parking levels via escalators and passenger lifts .
The construction of the Protea Court , the new retail extension and refurbishment of the shopping complex , forms Phase 1 of a future master development plan that includes the addition of a high rise office tower , refurbishment of the existing office towers , blocks of upmarket residential apartments and the refurbishment of the Sandton Sun Hotel and conference facilities .
The Protea Court is the only pedestrian entrance into the shopping centre and was designed to act as the focal street address for Sandton City . This signifies a new approach to the pedestrian entrance , as previously the shopping precinct pedestrian entrance approach was completely hidden from the street .
Sandton City was named as the 5-star winner of the Best Mixed Use Architecture Project in Africa and the Middle East as well as Best Mixed Use Project in the region by Property Awards Business Summit in Dubai . The Protea Court was also named
