The Boulders , sat on a landmark in Midrand , has been transformed into a much more contemporary space that pays homage to the boulders after which it is named . The refurbishment not only met the brief , but it also prompted plans for major changes to the shopping centre .
The Boulders is situated less than 3km off the N1 highway from the Allandale offramp on Old Pretoria Road . It is also conveniently close to all major roads linking Gallagher Estates , OR Tambo Airport , Sandton CBD and Pretoria . The two level building offers almost 40,000m 2 of GLA , office space and parking for 1,900 vehicles .
Brief Pierre Lahaye , the partner at MDS Architecture responsible for the project , says that the brief from the client was to refurbish the mall and public areas . These included the ceilings , tiling , demising piers and public ablutions .
The colour palette needed to be lightened from the outdated colour scheme . “ The previously grey / green flooring was replaced with porcelain tiles in light colours . The dominant palette in The Boulders now is off-white , interspersed with black to create strong graphic patterns that evoke traditional African patterns in a contemporary treatment ,” says Lahaye .
