The 2.4ha wetland attenuates storm water flows from the centre and aids in the filtration of the water before it enters the nearby Msunduzi River .
The C-shape of the mall was largely driven by the constraints of the site , the location of the wetlands and access considerations . Pretorius says that a single level building was the best solution for a regional mall of this nature , but it took a great deal of effort to achieve this .
Entrances To ensure easy access for shoppers , there are three entrances to the mall facing the parking area . An escalator links the shopping centre to the taxi rank situated beneath the northern part of the mall . A bridge over the wetlands brings shoppers
to the main , central entrance . The precinct also includes a freestanding McDonalds drive-through on site and parking for 750 cars .
The main entrance features an elaborate curved steel structure with glass edges . Its form evokes the umbrella shaped Acacia tree which is common in the area , with the “ branches ” of the tree providing shade and cover for the outdoor seating areas of the food court on either side of the entrance . The other two entrances also feature angled canopies with tinted glass edges .
The brightly coloured central column features natural stone mosaic tiles in a burnt orange , contrasting with the otherwise neutral colour palette of exterior finishes to draw attention to the main entrance .
The taxi rank offers parking for 126 taxis in an 8,000m 2 basement . Convenient escalator access brings shoppers directly into the building from the taxi rank , where hawkers have also been accommodated .
Interior High level windows were used in 75 % of the mall to ensure plenty of natural light . To filter the sunlight and break the glare , egg crating bulkheads were used on the sides of the windows . At the main entrance , colour was introduced inside these bulkheads for added interest .
“ The interior finishes are of a high quality ,” says Pretorius . Porcelain tiles with polished granite infill panels were used throughout the mall in organic patterns on the floor . There are three courts leading off the entrances , with the tiling pattern of the court near the main entrance
