An aesthetic upgrade to the Top Crop shopping centre was proposed in order to facilitate re-tenanting . Situated in Randpark Ridge on the corner of Duiker Avenue and Beyers Naudé Drive , the existing shopping centre had always been a prominent neighbourhood focal point with very popular restaurants . However , the existing tenant mix was deemed inadequate as it lacked a convenience supermarket and other local necessities . Since re-tenanting was proposed , consideration of the tenant signage would be a major concern .
Brief : Maximum Impact with Minimum Effort The primary brief was for the upgrade of the existing centre , giving it a fresh look , taking into consideration the re-tenanting . In addition , it was necessary to reign in the haphazard signage regime and provide a clear and consistent signage design to the new centre . The relatively tight budget indicated that minimum effort would have to result in maximum impact .
Design and Resolution The constraints due to the tight budget necessitated minimal architectural and structural changes to the building . The approach would be to rework the existing architecture in such a way that as much of the existing building was retained ; only particular features of the building would be structurally upgraded in a more contemporary design tongue . The signage regime would be concentrated to redesigned designated areas on the building and purpose-built signage towers .
