increases from the width in the typical malls . In the food court area , the roof glazing is considerably increased to create the illusion of a covered external space .
The food court node has the widest width in the mall , with generously spaced concession seating on either side , under arched bagged brickwork colonnades . Timber pergola and post elements , as well as planters , reduce the scale in this area and serve to enhance the illusion of an external weather protected space .
‘ Gable ’ walls , inspired by the profile of traditional ‘ Cape ’ farmstead gables , are used to define the extents of the node areas in addition to allowing for the crossing of building services and for the positioning of smoke baffles .
Materials The shopfront design is an integral part of the overall mall aesthetic and variations to the standard design have been stringently controlled and regulated by Landlord / Developer . Shopfronts have been efficiently designed to reduce wastage by utilising the full length of the supplied glass sheet size . An aluminium louvered panel is integral to the shopfront design and adds to the overall shopfront height . In addition , it allows access to cable runs and provides a means of getting spillover air-conditioning into the mall area .
The concept of a contemporary Cape Winelands aesthetic was followed through in the selection of finishes both internally and externally . Feature areas are clad externally in dry-pack stonework , contrasted with the use of steel channel elements .
Internally , natural stone in the form of honed travertine is used on demising columns and feature walls . Horizontal timber panels inspired by Cape wine barrels , are used as feature elements in demising columns and wall cladding to the node areas , creating a warm and natural feel to these wider and brighter areas .
Steel and timber pergola elements above the shopfronts in the node areas , further enhance the treatment of the façades as external elements . The general colour palette is white , and with the predominantly white polished porcelain tiled floor and the abundance of natural daylight , the mall has a fresh , open and airy atmosphere .
Internal and external water features are incorporated into the mall design and internally , large Ficus trees in timber clad planter boxes enhance the ‘ covered streetscape ’ concept . Benches used internally were cut and shaped from the blue gum trees that were removed from the site during construction . The benches have a natural rustic appearance that contrasts well with the highly polished tiled mall floor .
