impression of a floating roof . The more subdued natural light provides an opportunity for more theatrical lighting .
Forest-Inspired Interiors Paarl Mall ’ s interior ambience is warm and tactile . Design Base , MDS Architecture ’ s interior design division , made subtle references to the surrounding area through the use of timber and Western Cape Table Mountain sandstone cladding . Natural light is infused into the building from clerestory windows under the winged roof , offering views of the natural beauty surrounding the mall .
The approach up the entrance mall towards Woolworths is on an axis to Taal Monument which is viewed and framed through the clerestory windows . The restaurant patrons have a view towards Paarl Rock through the clerestory windows as well as a panoramic view of the distant Drakenstein mountains through a full height curtain wall towards the front of the building . The ability to see both views provides a strong context for the observer , and allows the person , whilst inside , to still be connected to their natural surroundings .
A key aspect of the interior design rationale was the concept that Paarl Mall should be a type of gallery for retail , an understated and elegant backdrop for what the stores have to offer . Subtle natural elements and hints of earth colours contrast with interesting floor designs and large volumes in the various courts for maximum effect .
Design Base provided the concept design for the shop fronts , including full height glazing . Architectural elements in the shopfronts create continuity with the overall theme , but still allow flexibility for retailers to express their individual
