Martin Wragge , of Monex Development Company , identified the swampland , now known as Century City , as a suitable site for development . The land had been set aside for low cost housing , but he visualised it as a premier node for offices . This area was envisaged as the first true office park environment to be created in the Western Cape , which would incorporate a work environment encompassing all the requirements a safe and pleasant office could achieve - security , easy access from a major freeway , access to shops and plenty of parking space . As a result of this vision , many corporate head offices have now located their headquarters in the Century City precinct .
Historically , shopping centres have been the catalyst for huge building projects ; they have spawned office developments such as the Tygervalley Shopping Centre , which led to Tygerpark , the Velodrome and the surrounding business areas . Sandton Shopping Centre , in the northern suburbs of greater Johannesburg , and many others , have had a similar effect on the proliferation of development in the surrounding areas and on the environment .
Located off the N1 Freeway , centrally situated between Durbanville and the CBD of Cape Town , approximately seven minutes from either side , with direct access off the freeway , the site has the most accessible location in South Africa .
