River-inspired Interiors Given the harsh winters and very hot temperatures experienced in the area in summer , there was a deliberate emphasis on the interior architecture and design , ensuring that the shopping centre is a veritable oasis from the mainly industrial surroundings .
The interiors of Vaal Mall were designed by Design Base , the interior design arm of MDS Architecture . Illustrating the benefit of using the same team for both interior and building design , the swirling river theme has been consistently applied throughout the mall and the detailing . Standard pots , planters and timber benches were customised using various colours and mosaic detailing , again reinforcing Vaal Mall ’ s branding , which also has a strong link with the interior design and river theme .
High quality porcelain floor tiles in hues of blue , organic green and natural stone were laid in patterns to simulate running water . A polished , composite marble was inserted into the tiles for jewel-like reflections . The tiles were difficult to lay in curves , but the superb job by the subcontractor creates the impression that the running water seems to flow into whirlpools and swirls under the promotional courts .
Site Challenges The site was previously an old dump-site that had been covered over and left , which created particular problems for the structural engineer in creating the right founding . In certain instances , the suspect material had to be removed and replaced . The dump site remains as a mound on the Northwest end of the site , This has now been capped and is currently being landscaped to ensure another green lung zone for the area .
The wind and subsequent dust storms in the area posed logistical problems , particularly as the roof was installed during the windy season and the team could only work for a few hours per day . From a safety and security point of view , the team had to constantly monitor subcontractors to ensure that safety harnesses were being used .
Other than wind challenges , existing sewer lines and storm water had to be rerouted to accommodate the mall prior to construction .
Flanagan & Gerard made commitments to local upliftment and the creation of jobs and external finishing was one area in which skills transfer took place .
