the greenbelt . As with all retail centres , as much visible surface parking abutting Carl Cronje Drive , was provided . The architects made certain that the parking area was adequately landscaped and detailedt . Special care was taken to bring out the paving finishes and details from the Centre into the pedestrian walkways within these areas .
The plan is anchored on either end by the major tenants in Woolworths and @ home to the North and Pick n Pay to the South . The overall length of the open street measures 250m . This street is articulated by 3 ‘ village squares ’ and a number of bridges that cross the mall at first floor level . Further definition is achieved with raised and flush tree planters , specially designed water features and freestanding pavilions The squares are , in all cases , the focus of the restaurant offerings where these tenants are actively encouraged to spill out onto the squares with their seating , umbrellas , music and individual vibe that brings to life these spaces until late into the night . Walkways and bridges at first floor levels service the offices and other tenancies and provide an interesting double-storey proportion to the internal street resulting in a wonderful dynamic of pedestrian activity and overlooking features that help to further articulate the streetscape .
A small glazed pavilion was designed adjacent to the theatre to provide a unique double volume restaurant that could capitalise on the views at first floor level overlooking the greenbelt and river valley .
The natural topography of the site afforded the architects the opportunity to achieve a building that , from Carl Cronje Drive , appears to be mostly a single-storey complex , except for about 4,000m 2 of offices which are set back at first floor level . This gives the building the appearance of a reduced scale and an elegant façade with an articulated and interesting roof structure and profile .
A natural slope of about 11m over the site gave the architects the opportunity to tuck the
