into the structure of the building and that elements were to be accented , as opposed to providing general , even illumination . High contrasts in light levels between the malls and the piazza were to be minimised to achieve an even transition between the spaces . A seamless integration between the internal and external areas was to be achieved to ensure that the building read as a continuous space , as opposed to individual areas .
Implementation - External Areas The external areas were to be lit in an unobtrusive manner , while achieving sufficient impact to make the building elements read . General area lighting was achieved by using indirect post top fittings . This provided a soft general illumination , while minimising glare into the surrounding residential areas . The reflector is also adjustable , enabling further glare reductions to be achieved . The structural elements of the façade were lit by wall-mounted fittings which not only accented the structure , but also defined the extent of the development .
Design Quarter has four unique water features . The first of these is on the corner of the building as one enters . Water is jetted from the base of the water feature onto the underside of a projection some 2m above the base . The water then runs down the sloping back of the water feature . Underwater lighting was used to light this water feature . The fittings are hidden amongst the rocks in the base of the water feature which also hide the water jets . A good lighting solution was therefore achieved as one only sees the effect of the lighting but not the fittings .
BASEMENT PLAN
Implementation - Internal Malls The primary lighting to the main mall was achieved by integrating metal halide downlighters into the bottom end of the pipes that hold the upper level cantilever walkways . Additional and emergency lighting was provided by recessed compact fluorescent downlighters .
The upper level cantilever walkways are lit by column-mounted , compact fluorescent up / downlighters . These provide a rhythmic pattern of pools of light on the ceiling and the walkway . There are no harsh accents , resulting in a warm and comfortable environment .
The second of the four water features occurs in the main mall . The water feature is designed as a flower with petals projecting into the centre . Jets of water spray onto the underside of the petals . The lighting has been arranged so that under water floods project along the jets of water , thereby eliminating the underside of the petals .
