Educational Component: This comprises ADvTECH’ s Varsity College, which signed a significant long-term 10,000m 2 anchor lease involving two of the four new buildings. Cape Peninsula University of Technology( CPUT) leased 3,000m 2 of educational space for its Sports Management Department. Its facilities include a Sports Performance Laboratory, which caters for rehabilitation and high-performance training and instruction and will reinforce the famous Newlands precinct’ s reputation as a leading international sports science hub.
Commercial Component: This is housed in the iconic new glass-clad The Snakepit Building, which has boldly changed the architectural landscape of the world-famous NCG field. The building edges the cricket oval and fills the gap between the Northern Pavilion and the Railway Edge. It is already one of the most televised and photographed buildings in South Africa. Although all five floors were originally designed for conventional office space, the co-owners were quick to pivot with the onset of the pandemic and turn adversity into advantage by converting three floors into state-of-the-art co-working facilities, now managed by WORKSHOP17, South Africa’ s market leader in co-working space. The remaining two floors of this iconic building have been leased to international tenants.
To celebrate the rich cricket history of the NCG and the Western Cape, a new Cricket Museum and Memorabilia Store has been designed on the ground level of The Snakepit Building.
To enable the NCG to become a significant player in the Western Cape’ s booming boutique events and conferencing market, the groundfloor piazza is now flanked by a new 1,000m 2 subdivisible multipurpose hall and the new Cricket Museum, which itself has been designed for multipurpose use. The Exhibition Hall has proven to be a versatile and well-utilised space and is regularly used for markets, exhibitions and events that activate the precinct beyond match days.
