KINGS WALK SHOPPING CENTRE, PRETORIA
Currently under construction and scheduled to open in April 2027, Kings Walk Shopping Centre combines contemporary design, outdoor living and community integration on Pretoria’ s urban edge.
Situated at the junction of Solomon Mahlangu and Bronkhorstspruit Road east of Pretoria, the 32,000m ² centre is designed by MDS Architecture and developed and owned by Moolman Group. Completion is scheduled for April 2027.
The centre occupies a strategic position between the affluent suburbs of Pretoria East and Mamelodi, with the design responding to this diverse catchment. Its crescent-shaped form draws visitors in from multiple entry points, while secondary entrances serve the Boxer and Checkers courts. A dedicated pedestrian entrance connects directly with public transport facilities, including an integrated taxi rank at the edge of the parking area.
“ The design philosophy here was about creating a sophisticated, contemporary environment that feels genuinely connected to its context: the landscape, the community, the street,” says Pierre Lahaye, partner at MDS Architecture.
A strong connection to the outdoors is central to the design. An outdoor precinct to the north-east takes advantage of morning sun and natural afternoon shade, incorporating an amphitheatre, LED screens, a children’ s water feature, outdoor play area, stage and landscaped lawns. The space is intended to accommodate community events and informal gathering.
Indigenous trees and green walls soften the development, while the potential transformation of the adjacent floodline into a curated parkland is being investigated. This would further integrate the centre into its surrounding greenbelt.
“ The outside space has been doubled up to cater for more people,” says Lahaye.“ Spur and Panarottis will have exterior seating areas, mounds will screen the parking, and it will genuinely feel like a park environment.”
Internally, the curved mall is anchored by Boxer and Pick n Pay, with Shoprite positioned at the junction of the malls and anchoring the main food court. Restaurant seating extends into the surrounding spaces, while the pedestrian entrance incorporates waiting areas, Wi-Fi and charging facilities.
The interior palette is warm and contemporary, combining timber accents, pendant lighting, clerestory windows and bespoke furniture. A central tree creates a focal point within the main court, while boutique-standard ablutions feature earthy finishes and water- and energy-efficient fittings.
Externally, dark brick, earthy tones and carefully integrated tenant signage create a cohesive street-facing architecture. Cashbuild is incorporated into the overall scheme, while commissioned local artwork will further reinforce a strong sense of place.
Kings Walk demonstrates how contemporary retail architecture can combine commercial requirements with outdoor activation, public transport integration and community-focused spaces.
