FLEURHOF MALL: UNLOCKING ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES BETWEEN SOWETO AND ROODEPOORT
A recent sod-turning ceremony marked the start of construction at Fleurhof Mall, a joint development by Abcon Developments and Masingita Group of Companies, that will serve as a critical economic link between the historically segregated areas of Soweto and Florida / Roodepoort. Positioned to create significant job opportunities both during construction and after opening, the project is set to bring formal retail, small business opportunities and improved access to a fast-growing urban community.
Situated on Fleurhof Drive, a strategic commuter link completed in 2017, the site directly connects Soweto to the western suburbs via key arterial routes. This location positions the mall to draw customers from both communities while boosting local trade and accessibility.
Bryce O’ Donnell, Managing Director, Abcon Developments says:“ The development signals a new phase in the economic transformation of Fleurhof, one of Johannesburg’ s largest integrated housing developments. More than 9,000 housing units have been completed in Fleurhof in the last decade, with thousands more underway. This rapid population growth, coupled with a lack of nearby formal retail centres, has created a pressing need for accessible, well-serviced shopping and business facilities.”
The development is expected to generate hundreds of construction jobs over the next 12 months, with further permanent employment created across retail, management and support services once the mall opens. Local hiring policies will prioritise opportunities for residents in Fleurhof ensuring that the project delivers tangible economic benefits to the communities it serves.
Beyond employment, Fleurhof Mall will provide a platform for local entrepreneurs and small businesses to access a larger customer base. With the primary market area including Fleurhof, parts of Florida, Robertville and Meadowlands, and a secondary market extending to Florida North, eastern Robertville, and Roodepoort North, the mall’ s reach will extend across a densely populated urban zone with strong potential for retail growth.
Dr Mike Nkuna from Masingita says:“ Fleurhof Mall will unlock a direct economic corridor between Soweto and the West Rand, giving local residents and small businesses the opportunity to grow together.”
Construction is scheduled to be completed in August 2026, with the mall expected to open by September 2026.
