LERATONG CITY, GAUTENG
The journey to Leratong City has officially begun. A sod-turning ceremony in June marked the start of the iconic project, a partnership between the Gauteng government, Mogale City Local Municipality, and Trendville. Plans for the nodal development include 15,000 housing units, a 35,000m ² regional mall, a commercial precinct with government support services, and a private hospital. Later phases will include parks, public transport nodes, schools, and early childhood development centres. Strategically located across from the regional Leratong Hospital and at the intersection of major roads connecting Mogale City, Soweto, Randfontein, Merafong, Roodepoort, Florida, and Johannesburg, the development spans 350 hectares. Expected to catalyse economic and infrastructure growth, the first phase, designed by MDS Architecture, is scheduled to open alongside Leratong City in October 2026. McCormick Property Development( MPD) will lead the project, with construction set to commence before the end of June. Since 1983, MPD has developed 88 award-winning malls across five provinces. Leratong City will be its 89th retail project and largest to date. Innovative concepts such as the Kasi CoLAB township design entrepreneurship incubator, market gardens, and sports facilities are central to MPD’ s approach. These, combined with communitycentred, local-first initiatives and family-oriented entertainment, continue MPD’ s legacy of uplifting and empowering communities while delivering world-class retail developments.
MAMA SHELTER RESIDENCES, CAPE TOWN
Situated on Bree Street, Mama Shelter Residences Cape Town comprises 62 residences, marking the brand’ s first hotel and residences in South Africa.
The project is part of a mixed-use redevelopment of 111 Bree Street by Kasada, an independent real estate private equity firm focused on hospitality in Africa, and Ingenuity, a Western Cape – based property and development company. It transforms the former Netcare Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital, which relocated to the Foreshore.
Mama Shelter Residences includes a 127-key hotel alongside 62 serviced residences, from studios to three-bedroom apartments. Mama Shelter, part of Ennismore – a global collective of entrepreneurial, purpose-driven brands – is celebrated for its playful and creative design.
