Located on the corner of Somtseu Road and Sylvester Ntuli Road in Durban’ s North Beach precinct, the school has been designed to accommodate learners from Grade 8 to Grade 12, introducing subjects such as Marine Sciences, Maritime Economics, Nautical Science and Coding and Robotics.
For architects and urban designers, however, the significance of the project lies not only in its educational mandate but in how the campus engages with Durban’ s coastal and industrial identity.
Building a School for the Ocean Economy South Africa’ s maritime sector has long been concentrated around Durban, home to the busiest container port in sub-Saharan Africa. Yet despite the economic significance of shipping, logistics and marine infrastructure, specialist maritime education has historically remained fragmented and largely disconnected from mainstream schooling.
